WEAll Scotland calls on MSPs to be bold in National Outcomes debate

In a just and compassionate Scotland, everyone should have the opportunity to thrive. But right now people are struggling as we face increasing financial and environmental crises.

As the Scottish Parliament debates the National Outcomes today, we urge MSPs to be bold. The National Performance Framework and National Outcomes, have the potential to be transformational. Creating a Scotland where communities flourish, where we tackle poverty by redistributing wealth fairly and we take urgent action on the climate and environmental crises.

But in its current form, the National Performance Framework falls short of being able to deliver the powerful vision it paints. We need bold action from the Scottish Parliament to turn rhetoric into action. One of the biggest stumbling blocks on the way to making this vision a reality, is the outdated design of our economy.  We urgently need a Wellbeing Economy that delivers social justice on a healthy planet.

The consultation process for the revision of the National Outcomes has had very little engagement with people in Scotland. In order for the National Outcomes to reach their full potential they should be co-produced using a deliberative participatory process that has both breadth and depth.

Delivering a Wellbeing and Sustainable Development Bill is essential to strengthen the clarity of the National Performance Framework and place stronger mandates on public bodies. The Bill has the potential to transform the National Performance Framework into the inspiring wellbeing framework that Scotland needs to tackle the challenges of our time.
